Eva "Eve" M. (Senders) Hughes

—    Eva "Eve" M. (Senders) Hughes, age 96, of Mankato, died peacefully on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at Oaklawn Health Care Center in Mankato, MN.

   Eva was born on September 6, 1917 in Canton, Illinois.  She was the first child of Forrest Vernon and Ina Mae (Day) Senders.  She attended Industry (IL) High School her first three years and graduated from Farmington (IL) High School in 1936.  Later she took classes at Texas Tech College and Mankato State College. Eva married William J. Hughes in Canton, MO, on June 1941.  She worked as a secretary for various firms in Mankato, including Ken Bistrup Inc. and Johnson Reels.  Eva was a life-long reader.  In her last years, as her sight declined, she discovered audio books and listened to everything of interest to her from both local libraries (sometimes more than once).  For a while she was a member of the Thursday Reading book club and served a term as its president.  Eva was active in the early years of the Merely Players Community Theater, serving on the original advisory board and acting in several productions.  She appreciated antiques and owned Eve's Antiques in rural Mankato in the 1960's and 1970's.  She also enjoyed painting and traveling.  In later life the highlight of her year was attending her family reunion in Illinois and enjoying the fried catfish served in the local restaurants.

   Eva is survived by her daughter (Alice) Katherine Hughes of Mankato and many, many nieces and nephews and their families.  She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and siblings Florence (Francis) Jacobs, Alice (Kenneth) Welch, Frances (Joseph) Pounds, Anna Ruth (Robert) Riley, Irvin (Doris) Senders, Forrest (Bernice) Senders, and Lois (Dale) Albert.

   Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Woodland Hills Funeral Home.  Interment will be in Guy-Pleasant View Cemetery, McDonough County, Illinois.  Visitation and burial in Illinois will be through Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home of Macomb, Illinois.

   Memorials may be directed to VINE Faith in Action, any local library, the American Cancer Society, or any service for the blind.
