Victor Alfred Altenburg, age 87, of Mankato passed away Friday, March 15, 2013. A private funeral service will be held. Victor was born October 13, 1925, to Walter and Laura (Wilke) Altenburg in Truman, MN. He was an Army veteran serving during World War II from 1944 until his honorable discharge in 1946. On October 22, 1947, he married Leila Reiter in Truman, MN. He farmed for several years then moved to Mankato in 1956 and worked at Continental Can Co for 35 years. Once he retired he picked up the game of golf and played at least 5 days a week. In between golf he loved to play cards, go fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Leila, and two daughters: Karen (Brad) Walker and Deb (Dennis) Schuette; 5 grandchildren, one great-grandson and three sisters. He was preceded in death by his son, Dale, one brother and one sister.
The family sincerely thanks those who have offered their kind words, prayers and support during the last few weeks that have helped bring smiles and fond memories of his life.
