Marjorie (Jacobsen) Smith

—   Marjorie (Jacobsen) Smith, 81, known to most as Margie, of Minnesota Lake, MN, died Friday, February 15, 2013. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Peace United Church of Christ, Minnesota Lake, MN. Visitation will be held at Peace United Church of Christ on Monday evening, February 18 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Pastor Brooke Wickliffe Fisher will officiate and the interment will be at Peace Cemetery, Minnesota Lake. Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells is in charge of arrangements.

  Margie has been a life-long resident and champion of Minnesota Lake. She was born in Minnesota Lake on April 8, 1931, the oldest of 13 children, to August and Loretta (Brandt) Jacobsen. She graduated from Minnesota Lake High School and married the love of her life, Jay Smith of Wells, MN on August 10, 1949 at the Evangelical and Reformed Church of Peace in Minnesota Lake where she remained an active member until her death.

  Margie was employed during most of her adult life, including ownership of the Smith Variety Store in Minnesota Lake. She was always active in church and community volunteer activities, including the Kramer House where she developed a strong interest in the house's history, preservation and restoration. In mid-life she took up quilting, making many beautiful quilts that she gave to her children and grandchildren. She always had a quilt entry in the Arts and Crafts Division at Festag and once at the Minnesota State Fair. Her quilts won many ribbons. She also extensively researched and documented her Jacobsen family history and even wrote a book about it called Through the Screen Door.

  Margie will be remembered by many and missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her children: Lois (Bill) Stevens of St. Paul, MN, Gary (Claudia) Smith of Wells, LuAnn (Jerry) Schwarz of Waseca, MN and Rick (Joan) Smith of Minnesota Lake; grandchildren: Mark Stevens of St. Paul, Erin (Josh) Lutterman of Mankato, MN, Darek (Stephanie) Schwarz of Chanhassen, MN, Preston Smith of Wells, Emily (Mike) Bemis of Chaska, MN, Gail Smith of Minnetonka, MN, and Jacob Smith of St. Cloud, MN; great-grandchildren: Sam, Hannah, Nicholas and Lucy Stevens; Rachel and Allison Lutterman, Ezekiel Bemis and Tobiah Schwarz. She is also survived by siblings: Adrian (Mary) Jacobsen of Minnesota Lake, Mavis (Francis) Cain of Wells, Carol (Ronald) Oltman of Fairmont, MN, Joyce Leonard of Mankato, August (Geri) Jacobsen, Jr., of  Fountain Valley, CA, Bonnie (Mark) Elmer of Lakefield, MN, Bill Jacobsen of Summerville, SC, Susan (Jeff) Braun of Wells, Robert (Carol) Jacobsen of Minnesota Lake and Betty (Rupert) Jones of Poway, CA.

  She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Smith; parents August and Loretta (Brandt) Jacobsen; brother, Willard (Smokey) Jacobsen; and sister Annette (Jacobsen) Karge.
