Steve was born on August 9, 1950 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and was the son of Viola and Aziza Remington.

After his father passed away, the family moved to Waseca, Minnesota, where Steve graduated from Waseca High School in 1968. Steve earned both a Bachelor and Master's Degrees from Mankato State University in Technical Theater and held a number of positions in designing and building stages along with theater lighting design. This path of teaching led him back to Mankato where he earned an additional Master's Degree in Business.

While he was teaching business courses at Mankato State University, he met his future wife, Sheila Hougo. In 1986, they were united in marriage at St. Mark's Church in Saint Paul. After spending the next academic year at Winona State University, Steve and Sheila moved to Memphis, Tennessee where he completed a PhD in Marketing from the University of Memphis in 1993.

Steve and Sheila then began their next journey where he taught at University of Louisiana in Lafayette for seven years and fell in love with the culture and food of the Cajun heritage. The desire to be closer to family, helped them to make the decision to move to Storm Lake, Iowa in 1999 where Steve taught Marketing at Buena Vista University, until his retirement in May of 2013. Steve was an active member of Buena Vista Historical Society and helped coordinate living histories of Buena Vista County WWII veterans.
