Helena C. Schmidt


—   Helena C. Schmidt, 92, of Claremont, Minnesota passed away Thursday, August 15, 2013, at Fairview Care Center in Dodge Center.

  Helena Christine Nelson was born April 30, 1921, in Oshawa Township, St. Peter, Minnesota to Sigfrid and Alma (Johnson) Nelson.  She graduated from St. Peter High School in 1938 and Mankato Commercial College in 1939.  She accepted a bookkeeper position at Campbell Feed Mill in Blooming Prairie, MN in 1939.  Shortly thereafter, she took another bookkeeper position at the Production Credit Association in Blooming Prairie where she worked for the next twenty years achieving the level of secretary/treasurer of the PCA (equivalent to vice president).  She was united in marriage to Armin Schmidt on November 21, 1959, at First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie.  The couple farmed in Havana Township, Steele County.

  Helena served in a variety of roles at her church, both First Lutheran in Blooming Prairie and St. John Lutheran, Claremont.  She was a Sunday school and confirmation class teacher, ladies aid member, AAL officer, church treasurer, and worked at church ice cream socials and pancake suppers.  She was a member of the Busy Mothers Extension Club.  Helena was treasurer for the Starks Corner Creamery and also wrote articles for the Owatonna Peoples Press, tutored adults with reading disabilities, worked as a bookkeeper for Deml Garage in Claremont.  She also worked for 17 years as secretary at the First Presbyterian Church in Claremont retiring in 2005 at the age of 84.

  She enjoyed spending time with her family.  She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, baking and cooking.  She had perfect penmanship and could quickly spot grammatical, punctuation and spelling errors in written materials.

  She is survived by two daughters Linda Schmidt of Rochester, Louise (and Keith) Roberts of Columbia Heights; two grandsons Richard and Zachary Roberts of Columbia Heights, four brothers, Carl (and Dolores) Nelson of Sterling, IL. Robert Nelson of Janesville; Donald Nelson of Madison Lake; Paul Nelson of New Brighton; and one sister Barbara (and Robert) Lamont of Madison Lake plus many other relatives and friends.

  She was preceded in death by her husband Armin Schmidt in 1981; her parents; three brothers Kenneth Nelson (2009), Leonard Nelson (2011), and James Nelson (2013).

 Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home in Owatonna on Sunday August 18, 2013 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 19, 2013 at 11:00 AM at St. John Lutheran Church, Havana Township with the Reverend Alan Broadwell officiating.  Interment will be in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Havana Township.  Memorials are preferred to donor's choice.
