Gordon Cumming


Services will be held on July 23, 2008, 2:00 pm St. John’s Episcopal Church, Mankato, MN. Interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery at a later date. Born on the family farm in Mapleton Township on June 7, 1918, Gordon was the son of William Birchard Cumming and Myrtle (McKinnon) Cumming. He graduated from Mapleton High School, was inducted into the U.S. Army in October 1941. He served in Alaska, and then was accepted as an Air Force Cadet. He was copilot on a B-24 in Italy with lifelong friend Vic Beehler and continued flying for over 50 years.

On January 3, 1948 Gordon and Reeve Britton were married at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Janesville, MN. They farmed between Mapleton and Minnesota Lake and especially treasured their neighbors. After retiring, they traveled together, driving the Baja peninsula of Mexico and visiting Europe, Turkey, Italy and Spain.

Gordon served on the Mapleton School Board, was active in American Legion, VFW, Wells Gun Club, Heather Curling Club and the Maple River Burns Club. He served on the Memorial Day Honor Guard into his eighties.

Gordon is survived by his wife Reeve; 2 children; Mark and Denise, 3 grandchildren; Jennifer Cumming of St. Peter, Clarence Cumming (Sarah) of Plymouth and Jillian Cumming of Mankato, 2 great-grandchildren; Hattie and Mackenzie, sisters; Sylvia Dunn of Mapleton and Doris Harvey of Zion, IL, brothers and sisters-in-law; Joe (Marje) Britton, Phil and Jeanette (Britton) Hegseth, Lowell Denn, John (Rosemary) Britton, Bill and Agnes (Britton) Haag, Irene Cumming-Foster and Nancy Auspos. He was a beloved uncle and grandfather.

Preceded in death by brothers Stuart and Stanley Cumming; sister Jean Floden and husband Harry; granddaughter Josie; and great-grandchildren Peter, Gracie and Jonathan; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert Orson Britton and wife Lola, Katherine Barthelmus, Helen Denn, Gordon and Beulah (Britton) Johnson.
