It’s frustrating being a common sense guy in this area. One needs to just look at Jan. 28 Free Press as a microcosm of the insane economic and political mindset of this area.

The front-page story whines how state budget cuts will affect MSU’s budget. In the op-ed section, a letter to the editor questions why the city’s biggest worry is pellet guns (a great question I am certain no council member will ever have to answer to). The Valley section then proudly proclaims a 3 percent pay raise for city workers this year and additional guaranteed increases the next two years.

In a time of massive private sector layoffs, declining economic conditions, state and local budget cuts, corporate wage and capital spending freezes, I ask the sensible people of this area: Why is our city worried about pellet guns and pet chickens? Why was our city workers union exempt from tightening their belts and making a sacrifice? Hearing local officials say we may need to close libraries, parks and raise taxes is nauseating when we see how they spend the time and money they do have.

More of our money is not what this city or state needs; it needs accountability, responsibility, and a sense of priority. Coincidentally those are the three attributes most liberals lack.
