Minnesota Fishing Report: Updated July 18

MANKATO AREA Walleyes continue to be caught on the south end of Lake Hanska with spinners and crawlers. On Lake Washington, leeches are working best for walleyes in 14 feet, while crankbaits are the ticket on the weedlines of Madison Lake. Bass action is strong on all lakes in less than 10 feet, while the bays and points on Washington are providing steady panfish action.

Texas rig works in Minnesota

People always ask me why I stick with the Texas-rigged worm when the fishing pace is slow and it is harder to cover a lot of ground than say, a buzzbait, spinnerbait or crankbait. Well, of the 51 I’ve landed, 28 of those fish have come on Texas rigs, including a 6-pound whopper on opener with fellow Free Press staffer Tanner Kent and his father, Rex.

Remember those days when the cost of gas was just an incidental thing, one of the myriad minor expenses? Today, at $4 a gallon, it is the major expense of any road trip, fishing or otherwise.

The Minnesota bass fishing opener (the real opener in my book) is a unique opener in that the purpose of the delayed start is to allow the bass to go through the spawn somewhat protected.
