St. Peter — Dakota Meadows Middle School eighth-graders went through a quick graduation ceremony Wednesday morning and then took to the water a short time later as they celebrated with a team-building exercise.

The Cardboard Regatta gave the soon-to-be ninth-graders an opportunity to enjoy a final full day of school having some fun during a short field trip. Half of the eighth-graders traveled to the pool on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus and the other half went to the Lake Crystal Recreation Center to put their handmade watercraft to the test.

Duct tape, perserverance and a sense of humor proved to be the best tools for the soggy competition.

Thursday is the last day of classes for the Mankato Area Public Schools students, who will be let out for summer vacation during the noon hour.
