(PHOTO GALLERY) East/Loyola girls hockey falls in section title game

---- — ST. PETER — For the second year in a row, the Mankato East/Loyola girls hockey team fell in the finals of the Section 2A tournament, missing out on a trip to the state tournament.

Litchfield-Dassel-Cokato, the No. 2 seed, upended the top-seeded Cougars 3-2 despite East/Loyola's 33-19 shots-on-goal advantage.

A Mankato team has not been to the state girls hockey tournament since a combined team advanced in 1999.

Rebekah Kolstad and Amanda Broman scored goals for the Cougars.

Kennedy Sommerfeld scored twice for the Dragons, including a breakaway goal with 59 seconds remaining in the second period that ended up as the game-winning goal.

Abby Roediger stopped 31 shots in goal for the Dragons, including all nine she faced in the third period. The Cougars' Katie Paulson finished with 16 saves.

East/Loyola's season ends with 16-10 record.
