MANKATO — The Mankato Curling Club was converted to a bike polo rink to host the eight-team Battle for the Midwest regional tournament this weekend.

Mankato’s Blue Skunk Bike Polo Club is hosting the tournament, drawing teams from as far as Winnipeg and Indiana to compete. The Blue Skunks have been planning the regional tournament for six months, including purchasing and installing the boards at the curling club.

Bike polo is played much like you would expect, with two teams of three on bicycles shooting a small ball with specially designed mallets at nets on either end of the rink. Penalties are assessed for things like elbowing, slashing and putting your foot (or any other body part) on the ground during play.

The final rounds begin this morning with the finals scheduled for the afternoon. The event is free and can also be followed live on bikepolo.tv.
