Area runners are celebrating the arrival of spring this weekend and the chance to get outside for a run. Saturday morning kicked off the summer racing season with the Girls on the Run 5K at Sibley Park.
But another, more sinister, race took place Saturday afternoon, and it was a little more unorthodox. It was a 5K race just like many others throughout the summer, with a catch. Runners had to avoid groups of zombies trying to take a trio of flags away from the runner’s “life belt.”
The Mankato Zombie Run at Mount Kato, while not a normal 5K race, certainly entertained the race’s runners and the zombies who dressed up to scare the runners, complete with makeup by local artists. The Mankato post apocalyptic army had rules: No tackling, no grabbing, no grabbing more than one flag. Runners finishing the race with at least one flag received a medal, and could tell the tale of surviving the zombie horde.
