The last few years, Denver native Peter McGahey has been slowly working his way up the soccer coaching ranks. On Thursday, he landed his first collegiate head coaching position when he was named to head up the Minnesota State University women’s soccer program beginning in 2008-09.
McGahey replaces Kris Miskec who retires at the end of the school year.
“I know I’m coming into an excellent situation at Minnesota State,” McGahey said Thursday. “Kris Miskec deserves a tremendous amount of credit for the foundation she has built and the success the program has had. My challenge will be to build on what she’s established and try to move the program to a national championship level.”
McGahey spent last season as an assistant coach with a South Dakota State University program that has just completed its transition to Division I. The Jackrabbits were 9-4-4 last year and 5-1-2 in the Summit League.
Prior to his one-year stint at SDSU, McGahey was the technical director for the Colorado Fusion Soccer Club in Denver. The program involved boys and girls teams of all ages.
He also worked for a time as the Director of Coaching and Player Development for the Oklahoma Soccer Association. His previous collegiate coaching experience includes assistant positions at Central Oklahoma and Metro State.
