West splits doubleheader with Mayo Andrew Bruggeman provides heroics in Game 1 victory By Chad Courrier Free Press Staff Writer MANKATO — In the middle of a stretch of six games in four days — including playing a team from Rochester for the fifth consecutive game — there’s nothing like a seventh-inning rally to perk up the team.
Andrew Bruggeman’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Scarlets to rally for a 5-4 victory over Rochester Mayo in the opening game of Thursday’s Big Nine Conference baseball doubleheader at Franklin Rogers Park. However, West made seven errors in the second game, allowing the Spartans to win 13-2 in five innings. “What we get on the guys about is mental mistakes,” West coach Ethan Anderson said. “You’re going to drop fly balls or boot grounders, that’s human nature. But mental mistakes have really cost us.” In the opener, Luke Weber pitched 6 1/3 innings but left after giving up a go-ahead homer in the top of the seventh. Tyler Kuch got the final two outs to keep the Scarlets within 4-3. In the bottom of the seventh, there were two outs when Brendon Watts looped a single into center field that scored Ray Teachout with the tying run. After a wild pitch moved pinch-runner Tyler Bruggeman into scoring position, Andrew Bruggeman bounced one over the pitcher into center field, and Tyler Bruggeman slid home with the winning run as the Mayo catcher jumped to grab the throw.
