Sometimes even when you’re not so good ... you’re still pretty good.
Mankato West’s No. 1 doubles team of Kevin Gaare and Ryan Schwickert struggled to find their rhythm Thursday yet still managed to pull out a 6-4, 6-4 victory over a solid tandem from Mankato East. The triumph helped the Scarlets earn a 5-2 win over East to advance to the semifinals of the Section 2AA Team Tournament to be held at Gustavus next week.
“We just weren’t hustling, we were being lazy,” Gaare said afterward. “I finally told Ryan we had to start running down more shots and getting into position better. After that we started playing better.”
The East sophomore duo of Alex Welter and Phil Weyhe gave Garre and Gustafson all it could handle for most of the match. The Cougars’ other two pairings didn’t put up much of a fight as West won 6-0, 6-1 at second doubles and 6-1, 6-2 at third doubles.
