Cougars upset Scarlets at East Tournament Dan Larsen ignites offense By Denny Weller The Free Press MANKATO — Mankato East’s disappointing baseball season got a lot better Friday at Wolverton Field when the Cougars upset Mankato West 10-8 in a Big Nine Conference game.
Senior center fielder Dan Larsen belted a home run and double to drive in four runs as East improved to 4-13 both overall and in the Big Nine. It was also an opening-round contest of the Mankato East Baseball Tournament and advances the Cougars into today’s 11 a.m. semifinal round against New Ulm at Wolverton. “I was just trying to step up for my team, and I think things went pretty well,” Larsen said. “We had no pressure on us so we were hungry and wanted to get some hits ... the only down side has been losing games. “I think we learned how to deal with it since we hit rock bottom. We’re starting to win some games now, and that’s a lot more fun.” West (9-6) looked like it was ready to take control early when Brendon Watt’s two-run, second-inning single along with Jon Howard’s RBI single an inning later put the Scarlets ahead 3-0. Junior right-hander Luke Weber set down the Cougars in order through two frames before Drew Schumacher’s infield single ignited a two-run third.
