Gustavus Adolphus tennis player Jenni White had already played “the match of her life,” this week, according to her coach.
She simply didn’t have a second one in her.
On Friday, three days after scoring an upset victory in the team tournament, White opened the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Individual Tournament at the Brown Outdoor Tennis Complex with a loss to fourth-seeded Brittany Berckes of Amherst College.
Berckes defetated White 6-3, 6-2 and then advanced to today’s quarterfinals with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Wellesley College’s Jenna Mezin.
“(White’s win on Tuesday) meant so much to so many other people other than herself,” Gusties coach Heidi Carlson said.
Although Gustavus was eliminated from the team tournament that day, White gave her team a chance, defeating the individual tournament’s No. 2 seed, Katie Tabb of Washington & Lee University, 6-2, 7-5.
Washington & Lee went on to take second place, falling to Williams College in the championship.
On Thursday, White was honored as the Central Region’s senior player of the year.
