Loyola takes down St. Peter in baseball Crusaders jump out to early lead, roll to nonconference win By Chad Courrier Free Press Staff Writer MANKATO — Every time Mike Kiefer takes the mound, the Mankato Loyola senior expects to pitch a complete game.
And a complete game at this point of the season can sure ease the load on a pitching staff. “We’ve played a lot of games in a row so this really helps,” Loyola coach Chris Biehn said. “I thought he pitched well, his breaking ball was good. He threw 70 pitches, which is pretty good for seven innings.” Kiefer allowed seven hits and two walks as the Crusaders defeated St. Peter 5-1 in a nonconference game Friday at Franklin Rogers Park. He had seven strikeouts, four on called third strikes. “Every time I go out there, I want to throw a complete game,” Kiefer said. “It helps the team a lot if I can go seven.” Loyola got all of its runs in the first three innings. In the first, Jimmy Kiefer and Mike Kiefer started with consecutive singles, and Max Rotchadl laid down a bunt. The throw was wide to first, allowing Jimmy Kiefer to score. Mike Kiefer came in on Tom Meixl’s groundout for a 2-0 lead. In the second inning, Brian Brandt and Adam Murray led off with consecutive singles, and Tom Montag advanced the runners with a bunt. Jimmy Kiefer followed with a two-run double. The final run came in the third as Brandt doubled and Murray had an RBI single.
