Bill Melius tossed a four-hit shutout Wednesday, leading Winthrop to a 2-0 victory over Gaylord in a River Valley West amateur baseball playoff game.
Melius struck out two and walked two while pitching the complete game.
Chad Elston was 2 for 5 with an RBI for Winthrop. Teammate Dan Anderson was 2 for 4.
Gaylord was led by Jordan Berg’s 2-for-3 performance. Gaylord (7-16) returns to action at 2 p.m. Sunday with an away game against the loser of the Arlington-Fairfax matchup.
Winthrop plays St. Peter at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
