Maiers, Mendez lead U17 boys soccer team to Southwest District title

MANKATO

Goalkeeper Peter Maiers recorded back-to-back shutouts Sunday to lead the Mankato Hawks Classic 3, U17 boys soccer team to the Southwest District championship at Thomas O. Anderson fields.

Maiers stopped six shots in each game, as the Hawks defeated Glencoe/Gaylord 7-0 and Chaska/Chanhassen 6-0.

Goyo Mendez finished the afternoon with three goals and an assist, including a pair of goals in the first game.

Dustin Qualley also scored twice in the first game and tallied another in the second. Jacob Gish scored two goals in the final.

Brian Ewel and Chris Talamantez each finished the day with two goals. Talamantez also had an assist, and Zach Miller had a goal and an assist.

Sean O’Dea, Nick Jose, Nolan Meyer and Zach Wolke all had assists.

With the wins, the Hawks will advance to the state tournament, which begins Saturday in Blaine.
