MANKATO — The Minnesota State football team opens its 2013 fall practice schedule today at Blakeslee Stadium and the MSU practice fields.
Nearly 100 players will begin camp with the opening practice slated for 3 p.m. The first of 14 practices is scheduled to run until 5:30 p.m.
“Our first challenge is to understand that last year was last year and now we need to focus on the upcoming season,” interim head coach Aaron Keen said in a press release. "We have to put in the work and effort that put us in position for the level of success we had last year."
The Mavericks finished their 2012 season with a 13-1 record and advanced to the semi-finals of the NCAA Division II Tournament. Minnesota State opens its 2013 schedule on the road at the University of Mary on Sept. 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
Soccer ranked 6th
The MSU women's soccer team has been ranked sixth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason poll.
The Mavericks, who posted a 17-1-5 record and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight a year ago, is the only team from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in the Top 25. Winona State is receiving votes. MSU unofficially opens its season at home when it hosts an exhibition match against Macalester at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 25. MSU opens its regular season at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6 when it hosts Truman State.
This will be MSU's first season under head coach Brian Bahl. He became the fourth coach in the program's history when he was hired to replace Peter McGahey who left to take another job.
Bahl previously served as the head coach for the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Upper Iowa University the last six seasons. He was also an assistant coach at Northern Iowa for two seasons.
