VFW White wins New Ulm tournament

MANKATO — Mankato VFW White collected 18 hits to defeat New Ulm Gold 15-11 in the championship game of the New Ulm baseball tournament Sunday.

In the semifinals, Mankato defeated Minnetonka 1-0 behind the three-hit pitching of Nick Brink. He walked two and struck out five. Mankato got its run in the second inning on consecutive doubles by Brink and Alex Goettl.

In the final game, Conor Wollenzien and Goettl each drove in three runs, while Brink and Garret Banwart each had two RBIs. Tyler Stoffel and Ryan Theissen each had two hits and an RBI. Theissen was the winning pitcher, allowing four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. He gave up seven hits and four walks with eight strikeouts.

Mankato (16-2) plays at Edina tonight.
