Playoffs loom for local college teams

MANKATO — Tenth-ranked Minnesota State (31-8) will take on Minnesota Duluth (14-240 in the first round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Baseball Tournament Wednesday in St. Cloud.

The Mavericks and Bulldogs square off at 3 p.m. In other first-round game, St. Cloud State meets Bemidji State, Winona State takes on Concordia-St. Paul and Augustana plays Wayne State. The tournament runs through Saturday.

In softball news, Minnesota State has been selected to host the NCAA Division II Central Regional which begins Friday at The Diamond at MSU.

The Mavericks (38-10) will take on Augustana in a first-round game to be announced. The other game features Southeastern Oklahoma State vs. Winona State.

The four-team, double-elimination tournament runs through Sunday.

In other softball news, Bethany Lutheran has been invited to compete in the NCAA Division III Central Region Tournament in Pella, Iowa. The Vikings (23-18) will play No. 1 seed St. Thomas (37-5) in a first-round game at 10 a.m. on Thursday. The eight-team, double-elimination tournament runs through Sunday.
