Cougars place 4th at Big 9 Meet

ROCHESTER -- Led by No. 1 singles champion Mason Bultje, the Mankato East/Loyola boys tennis team finished fourth at the Big Nine Conference Championships Saturday with 33 points.

Rochester Mayo won the tourney with 66 points. Century was second (41), Winona was third (37) and Mankato West tied for sixth with Albert Lea with 28 points.

Bultje knocked off John Marshall's Jason Howard 7-5, 7-6 in the championship match. That came right after Bultje went to war against West's Bill Leitch and survived 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.

The Cougars' Dominic Cannella was the runner-up at second singles and Chris Liu was third at No. 3 singles and Kameron Saiki was fourth at No. 4 singles.

West's Leitch finished third at first singles. The Scarlets second doubles team of Kyle Sandmann-Calvin Miller and the third doubles team of Isaiah Stock-Mike Fedder each finished fourth.

St. James triangular: Mound-Westonka defeated New Ulm 7-0 and St. James Area 5-2 at St. James. In the other match, St. James defeated New Ulm 4-3.

For the Saints, Sandin Skow won twice at No. 4 singles, both in straight sets. St. James' Eric Heitz and Michael Hedlund also won twice at No. 3 doubles, also in straight sets.

New Ulm's Calvin Collum, Jr., and Josh Koelpin won singles matches vs. St. James, and the No. 1 doubles team of Nic Gartner and Isaiah Johnson also won.

Waseca splits: The Bluejays defeated Stewartville 7-0 and lost to Winona Cotter 4-3 in nonconference matches at Stewartville.

Against Stewartville, Ben Johnson won 1-6, 7-6 (5), 10-8 at No. 2 singles, and Dakota Johnson won 1-6, 6-4, 10-8 at No. 3. The No. 2 doubles team of Michael Butterfield and Marcus Dekruif won in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 10-5.In the loss to Winona Cotter, John Lewer won 6-1, 7-6 (4) at No. 1 singles, and Ryan Von Ende won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4. Dakota Johnson and Butterfield teamed up for a 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 win at No. 1 doubles.

Waseca (6-4) plays at Blue Earth Area on Monday.
