MINNEAPOLIS — Mankato West's Tanner Sonnek advanced to the finals of two events after the first day of the Class A state swimming and diving championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
He was the only Mankato swimmer to advance out of the prelims.
Sonnek took third place in the 100 breaststroke, finishing with a time of 59.12 seconds. He also took sixth in the 200 individual medley in 2:01.84.
Also for the Scarlets, Hayden Zeigler took 17th in the 100 butterfly (55.33).
West's 200 freestyle relay team of Sonnek, Zeigler, Luke Ambrose and Ben Rorem took 10th (1:30.73), and the 400 free relay of Sonnek, Zeigler, Ambrose and Rorem was 19th (3:26.32). The 200 medley relay team was disqualified.
Mankato East/Loyola's Nathan Dreyer was 18th in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.72), and Jacob Long finished 21st in the 100 backstroke (57.99).
The Cougars' 200 medley relay team of Dreyer, Long, Josh Hammond and Mitch Miller finished 12th (1:43.38).
The finals will take place today.
