ST. PAUL — Logan Swanson did not bring home a championship medal from the state wrestling tournament Saturday, but he thinks he brought home something just as valuable: A wealth of experience competing against the top wrestlers in the state.
“It’s amazing being up here,” Swanson said, after taking fourth place in the Class AA heavyweight division at Xcel Energy Center. “There were only two guys in the whole bracket that I had seen before so it was a pretty much an unknown to me.”
Swanson opened Saturday’s wrestleback action with a pin of Leandre Bauswell from Columbia Heights. In the next round he earned a 3-1 win over Jake Lehmann of Dawson-Boyd and then got stuck in 5:47 against Detroit Lakes’ James Huwe in the third-place bout.
“I knew I’d be in the consolation bracket right away so my goal was to place. I accomplished that and now I’m ready to come back next year.”
In other Class AA third-place matches Saturday, Scott West’s David Flynn won the bronze with a 7-2 win over Tyler Funk of Foley at 126 pound and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton’s Colin Ayers did the same with a 4-2 overtime win over Hunter Smith of Zimmerman at 132 pounds.
In Class A, Sibley East’s Hunter Retzlaff capped an impressive career with a third-place finish at 145 pounds. He decisioned Dylan Herman of United South Central 5-3 in the finale.
Retzlaff finished fifth as a sophomore, second as a junior and now third as a senior.
“I’m content with third,” Retzlaff said. “I knew it would be tough with (defending state champ Larry) Bomstad in the bracket. I thought I wrestled pretty well.
“It was especially exciting to wrestle up here with the team. It’s great to have your teammates around you the whole time.”
