FAIRBANKS, ALASKA — The Minnesota State men's hockey team's seven-game win streak was snapped on Friday night when the Mavericks lost 4-2 in a WCHA game to Alaska.
The Mavericks outshot the Nanooks 39-18, including an 18-2 advantage in the second period but couldn't get much past goalie Davis Jones (37 saves).
Matt Leitner and Johnny McInnis scored goals for Minnesota State, and Zach Palmquist had two assists. Goalie Cole Huggins stopped 14 shots.
For Fairbanks, Tyler Morley had two goals and an assist, Cody Kunyk had a goal and two assists and Colton Beck had a goal and an assist.
Morley gave Alaska a 1-0 lead in the first period, and that score stood until Leitner scored with 2:52 remaining in that lopsided second period.
In the third, though, Morley gave the Nanooks a 2-1 lead at 3:47, and Beck made it 3-1 with 4:53 to play.
Mavericks coach Mike Hastings opted to pull Huggins for an extra attacker with just under 4 minutes to play, and the strategy worked as McInnis pulled MSU within one again.
But they couldn't get the equalizer, and Kunyk scored an empty-netter in the final minute.
Minnesota State (11-8-0, 9-4-0) and Alaska will play again at 10:07 p.m. Saturday.
