MANKATO — Free Press staff writer Shane Frederick has been named “Sports Writer of the Year,” by Community Newspaper Holdings Inc., the parent company of The Free Press.
“Frederick is a well-rounded reporter as evidenced by his hockey coverage, particularly after the firing of the coach at Minnesota State Mankato. He augments print stories with an active, and interactive, hockey blog that includes live game coverage and an ongoing Q-and-A with readers. In addition, Shane crafts strongly organized and reported features about off-beat topics including a pair of marathon-running parents and bike polo.”
The Free Press competed in the “large newspaper” division of CNHI newspapers. The finalist for Sports Writer of the Year was Phil Stacey of The Salem, Mass., News.
