Minnesota State signs another point guard, plan to redshirt him

(Continued)

MANKATO —

Sidni Trotter, a 5-10 wing player from Bellevue East High School in Omaha, Neb., had committed to Gohl, and Thiesse said she’s excited to have her join the program.

“She’s a phenomenal athlete, springy, fast, quick,” Thiesse said. “She’ll really help us defensively, with our up-tempo style. She’s going to fit in nicely with what we’re trying to do.”

The Mavericks, who open the season this weekend at the Northern State tournament, have four seniors on the team. Thiesse said she’ll likely wait until the spring signing period to add more players.

Frederick to Detroit

Mankato East senior point guard Minnie Frederick, who grew up in Flint, Mich., is headed back home as she signed with University of Detroit Mercy.

Frederick has 521 assists in her two seasons at East, needing only six more to set the program record. She has 22 games with at least 10 assists, and she had a triple-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists in a game against Albert Lea as a sophomore. Her 17-assist game in 2010 against New Ulm ranks second in state history.

Frederick also has averaged 15.7 points and 4.1 rebounds over 47 career games, helping the Cougars advance to the section championship game last season.

Goerger, Elkins sign

Mankato West senior Jessica Goerger signed to play softball at St. Cloud State. Last season, Georger batted .557 with 11 doubles, four home runs and 26 RBI.

As a junior, the first baseman batted .418 with 15 doubles, two triples and 26 RBI.

“I made my decision around the middle of September,” Goerger said. “It just seemed like the best fit. They have a good nursing program and that’s what I want to go into.”

Teammate Missy Elkins, also a senior, has signed to attend Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D. She has been recruited as a pitcher and went 8-1 last season with a 1.00 earned-run average. She struck out 61 while walking only six. Elkins also batted .426.

“It came down to North Dakota and Northern,” Elkins said. “I finally decided Northern would be best for me. The have a good pre-med program and the coach said they’ll be able to work around that with softball.

“It’s nice to have the decision over with. Now I can just go out and have fun this spring without having to worry about making any hard choices.”
