MSU men's basketball team overpowers Jamestown

MANKATO — Minnesota State continued its winning ways on Sunday, thumping Jamestown 81-59 in a nonconference game at Bresnan Arena.

The first half saw a couple of lead changes early, but MSU asserted itself quickly, building an 11-point lead (15-4) with 12:26 left in the first half. The Mavericks continued to extend their lead as they took a 49-26 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Five Mavericks scored at least 11 points in the game, including seniors Tanner Adler and Gage Wooten. They scored 19 and 16 points, respectively.

Adler pulled down nine rebounds and connected on 3 of 7 3-point attempts. Wooten made every shot he took, including a 6-for-6 effort from the field and a 3-for-3 mark at the free-throw line.

Junior Zach Romashko added 14 points and nine rebounds while senior Connor O'Brien tallied 13 points. O'Brien was a perfect 7 for 7 from the foul line.

Senior Alex Hanks added 11 points, going 3 for 5 from beyond the arc. O'Brien had four blocks and Zach Monaghan had five assists.

The second half was closer as the Jimmies (3-4) outscored the Mavericks 33-32. Jamestown whittled the lead down to 16 points in the second frame but could get no closer.

MSU's biggest lead was 26 points at 48-22 when Romashko nailed a 3-pointer with 2:26 to play.

As a team, MSU shot 54.2 percent (26 of 48) from the field and 50 percent (8 of 16) from beyond the 3-point line. The Mavericks also snared 48 rebounds and had 19 assists.

Jamestown was led by Mark Hoge who scored a team-high 10 points. The Jimmies connected on 23 of 71 shot (.324).

Wooten lead the Mavericks in scoring with a 14.6 points per game average. Assem Marei is next at 13.0, Monaghan is third at 12.6, O'Brien is fourth at 11.4 and Adler is fifth at 10.8. Marei is out with an ankle injury but could be back by the end of the month or in early December.

The Mavericks (4-1) continue their homestand at 7 p.m. Tuesday when as they square off against the Clarke Crusaders at Bresnan Arena.
