Mankato West dozen head all-city football team

MANKATO — The Mankato West football team came within one victory of making it to another state tournament, and on Monday, 12 of its players were honored at the KTOE-Pepsi-Elks all-city banquet.

Four players from Mankato East and two from Mankato Loyola completed the 18-player honor team.

Senior Alex Berglin made 29 tackles from the defensive line. He forced three fumbles and made one sack. He also played some in the offensive line.

Senior receiver Will Claussen led the team with 41 catches for 732 yards and 11 touchdowns. He averaged 17.9 yards per catch, with a long reception of 92 yards. He also made nine tackles and a fumble recovery as a defensive back.

Senior lineman Jake Russell was a three-year starter at center, helping the Scarlets score 44 touchdowns this season. He also played some in the defensive line, making 29 tackles with one sack.

Senior linebacker Isaac Weber led the Scarlets with 128 tackles with one fumble recovery and a team-high 10.5 sacks.

Senior lineman Josh Wold was also a three-year starter at guard, and he helped the Scarlets pile up 1,953 yards rushing and 2,272 yards passing. He also made 39 tackles with two fumble recoveries and 2.5 sacks.

Junior linebacker Josh Athey made 33 tackles with one interception and 3.5 sacks. He also caught 11 passes for 149 yards and three scores.

Junior quarterback Ryan Schlichte completed 139 of 234 passes for 2,185 yards with 25 touchdowns, and he led the team in rushing with 683 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also played safety at the end of the season and came up with seven tackles and two fumble recoveries.

Junior running back Cory Johnson rushed for 593, averaging 8.y yards per carry, with nine touchdowns. He also had 19 catches for 263 yards and two scores.

Junior receiver Kevin Marzolf finished the season strong, making 21 catches for 389 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 18.5 yards per catch with a long of 81. He also made 41 tackles with one sack.
