MANKATO — Tiana Runck and Chandra Honebrink each made 12 kills as Minnesota State opened the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference volleyball schedule with a 3-0 victory over Winona State on Thursday at Bresnan Arena.
Scores were 25-21, 25-19, 25-18.
The Mavericks trailed in the first set until Runck served seven straight points for a 22-16 lead. Honebrink had six kills in the opening set, while Courtney Anderson added five kills as the Mavericks prevailed 25-21.
Honebrink's early serving streak made it 4-1 in gthe second set, and the Mavericks maintained a comfortable lead through the 25-19 victory. Runck had five kills in the second set, one more than Honebrink.
The Mavericks finished the match in the third set, though Winona State led 11-7. Jenna McNallan served six straight points to put the Mavericks on top for good. She also served the final three points of the set. Runck had six kills in the finale.
McNallan had nine kills and 14 digs,and Ellie Van De Steeg made 40 assists. Runck had a .588 hitting percentage, while Honebrink hit .423.
Bekah Saugen led Winona State (3-7, 0-1 in Northern Sun) with eight kills.
Minnesota State (5-3, 1-0) plays another Northern Sun match Saturday at Upper Iowa.
