West goes 1-2 in opener

MANKATO — The Mankato West boys tennis team opened the season with a home triangular on Saturday, beating Delano 6-1 and losing to Holy Family Catholic 4-3 and Lakeville North 7-0.

West coach Adam Doll proclaimed it a good start for the Scarlets.

“Delano is a good Class A school, and we just fell short against Holy Family Catholic,” he said. “Lakeville North is one of the best teams we’ll see this year. They finished runner-ups to Rochester Mayo in the section last season.”

Eighth-grader Ethan Swenson put together a good day for West. Playing No. 4 singles, Swenson defeated Holy Family’s Josh Mohling 6-0, 6-0, and Delano’s Jimmy Johnson 6-1, 6-0. He lost Lakeville North’s Nick Vossen 6-3, 6-3.

Sophomore Brady Schmidt was also 2-1 for the Scarlets. He won 7-6, 6-4 at third singles against Holy Family and joined with Ford Johnson to win 6-1, 6-2 at third doubles against Delano.

Johnson and Rolando Flores added 2-1 records as well. The duo combined to win 6-7, 7-6 (14-12) at third doubles against Holy Family, and Flores joined with David Pietsch to win 6-3, 6-0 at second doubles against Delano.

“Our youth led us today and showed great potential,” Doll said.

West (1-2) returns to action at 4 p.m. Monday with a nonconference dual at Willmar.
