The fledgling Mankato area women’s roller derby team that went 4-3 in its inaugural season of 2013 is back and poised to begin the home portion of its new season.
Year 2 of the Mankato Area Derby (MAD) girls is already two bouts old. The squad played matches at the Babe City Rollers of Bemidji and the Shipwreckers of the Harbor City Roller Dames in Duluth earlier this year and lost both of them.
MAD team spokesperson and skater Slamra Sue admits the wins may be a little tougher to come by this season.
“Last year we played a lot of first-year teams, like us, who were pretty new to the sport,” Slamra said. “This year our schedule is a lot tougher.
“We decided we’d rather play up than down so we can get better. I think fans will notice the skaters are a little faster and there’s more strategy involved.”
The MAD girls will have four home bouts at the Verizon Civic Center this year two more than they had in 2013. The home opener is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, April 19, against the MedCity Mafia of Rochester.
The current version of the MAD girls features a lot of familiar names from Season 1. Among the returnees are Whindy Q, Jaded By Design, Strawberry StrikeHer, board president Ver-Rockin-Ya and team captains Nauty Nelly and Nurse Nutcase.
Some of the new editions include Bad Wolf, Rebel Heart, Joker Tadeath and Mad Mamasita. Of the 17 skaters on the roster, 11 are from Mankato and North Mankato. There are also skaters from St. Peter, Madison Lake, Owatonna, Eagle Lake and two from New Ulm.
As always, the MAD girls are looking to grow the sport and are trying to get new players involved. To that end, they are holding another Fresh Meat Locker on May 4 at the YMCA to introduce potential new skaters to roller derby.
