MANKATO — A three-run sixth inning propelled Thunder Bay to a 13-12 victory over the Mankato MoonDogs in a Northwoods League baseball game Monday at Franklin Rogers Park.
Mankato scored seven runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and left the bases loaded.
After falling behind 2-0, the MoonDogs scored three times in the third inning. Chase Simpson's single and an error in the outfield allowed Quinnton Mack and Josh Fuentes to score, and Matt Wollenzin added a two-out RBI single to put Mankato on top.
A three-run sixth inning against reliever Mike Nowak, who didn't record an out, allowed the Border Cats to go up 7-3. However, Wollenzin's solo homer in the sixth innings, and Simpson's RBI single in the seventh pushed the MoonDogs closer.
However, Thunder Bay surged ahead with two runs in the eighth inning and four in the ninth.The MoonDogs scored seven runs in the bottom of the ninth and stranded three runners.
Simpson was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Wollenzin added two hits and two RBIs. Jonathan Rodriguez, Alex Polston, Hibraim Cordova, Krystian Leal, Mack and Zach Zehner each had an RBI. Mack, Wollenzin and Leal each scored twice.
The MoonDogs (14-13) play another home game with Thunder Bay today, starting at 1:05 p.m. at Franklin Rogers Park.
