Augustana opens tourney with victory

MANKATO —  

Cameron McCaffrey scored 23 points with seven assists as Augustana defeated Upper Iowa 79-65 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Central Region men's basketball tournament Saturday at Bresnan Arena

The third-seeded Vikings (22-8) led the entire game and were up 41-31 at halftime. The lead grew to 19 in the final four minutes as the Vikings shot 51.9 percent in the second half.

Alex Richter added 18 points, and Daniel Jansen had 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Upper Iowa (20-12), making its first Division II national tournament appearance, was led by Bo Pagel's career-high 19 points. He made 4 of 6 from 3-point range. Sam Elgin added 15 points.

Augustana plays Winona State or Northeastern State in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Sunday.
