Austin edges Mankato West 49-48

MANKATO — MANKATO — Shayley Vesel hit a putback with five seconds left to give Austin a 49-48 win over Mankato West in a Big Nine Conference girls basketball game Friday.

Cara Christiansen led the Scarlets with 18 points and seven rebounds. Kenzie Franke scored eight points, Sarah Buryska had seven points and five rebounds and Lexi Schoper finished with six points, four assists and six rebounds.

Jenna Svoboda led Austin with 13 points.

The Scarlets were plagued by poor free-throw shooting as they hit just 14 of 24 attempts for 58 percent. West (3-8, 2-4 in Big Nine) plays again Tuesday at Albert Lea.

Loyola boys 76, Cathedral 51: Carson Seifert poured in 31 points and had five steals to lead Mankato Loyola to the nonconference win at New Ulm Cathedral. Loyola jumped to a 48-22 halftime lead and never looked back.

Conner Tanhoff finished with 15 points and eight rebounds for the Crusaders. Evan Ellingworth scored 11 points and had five assists while Alex Pimentel grabbed eight rebounds.

Cathedral was led by Jeff Osborne’s 10 points.

Loyola (7-5) hosts Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial Tuesday.

East girls 78, Albert Lea 53: Minnie Frederick erupted for 27 points and had eight assists as Mankato East won the Big Nine Conference game at the East gym.

Claire Ziegler had 21 points and six rebounds for the Cougars. Taylor Karge added 12 points with 11 rebounds.

Albert Lea was led by Sidney Rehnalt’s 21 points.

East (7-2, 4-1 in Big Nine) hosts Hutchinson at 7:30 p.m. in a nonconference game tonight.

Austin 56, West boys 45: Zach Wessels scored 20 points and Tom Aase added 17 as the Packers won the Big Nine Conference game against visiting Mankato West.

The Scarlets were led by Austin Majeskie’s 22 points. He was 6 for 9 from 3-point range.

Jake Dale grabbed 10 rebounds for West and also scored nine points.

West (4-5, 2-2 in Big Nine) hosts Albert Lea Tuesday.

Albert Lea 75, East boys 61: Yasin Omar scored 28 points but it wasn’t enough as Mankato East dropped the Big Nine Conference game at Albert Lea.

Matt Bornholdt had 28 points for the Cougars.

The Tigers went 22 for 28 from the free-throw line.

East (1-9) hosts Rochester Mayo Tuesday.

Loyola girls 55, MCW 49: Alyssa Mettler led the Crusaders with 23 points and 10 rebounds in the Valley Conference win at Martin County West.

The Crusaders outscored the Mavericks 23-19 in the second half. Aunikah Bastian had 12 points and six assists and Annie Nawrocki had seven points and eight rebounds for Loyola.

Loyola (10-1, 5-1 in Valley) plays Maple River Monday at home.

Owatonna Baptist 55, IL girls 32: Immanuel Lutheran’s Jessi Schreyer scored 10 points with nine rebounds in the Minnesota Christian Athletic Association loss Friday.

Halftime score was 22-17 in favor of the Sabers.
