NORWOOD YOUNG AMERICA — Windom/Mountain Lake did the dirty work and Sibley East cleaned up as the Wolverines won twice on Saturday to capture the Section 4A wrestling team title and earn a berth in the Class A state tournament. It marks Sibley East’s first trip to state since 2007.

The Wolverines downed St. James 42-20 in the semifinals. In one marquee bout, Sibley East’s Austin Brockhoff (132) knocked off Isaac Carreon with a 13-0 major decision at 132 pounds.

In the other semifinals, Windom/Mountain Lake upset sixth-ranked Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial with a 33-22 victory. Among the key wins for WML were Joe Fischenich by 5-4 decision over Levi Marsh at 113, Clay Hockely by 7-2 decision over Tanner Elliot at 145 and Aaron Flatgard by 3-0 decision over Jesse Gunderson at 195.

With the Knights out of the way, Sibley East rolled to a 38-23 win over Windom/Mountain Lake in the finals. The Wolverines’ Tanner Pasvogel started things out with an impressive 3-2 decision over fifth-ranked Wyatt Stevens at 106 pounds.

WML’s Jared Wilaby came back with a nice win over seventh-rated Jason Meyer at 126 before Sibley East pulled away with falls from Brockhoff (132), Hunter Retzlaff (138), Mitch Wentzlaff (145), Aaron Bates (170) and Nathan Rose (220).

The Wolverines take a 21-8 record to the state tournament.

Section 2A: Class A’s top-ranked Jackson County Central delivered a pair of convincing victories Saturday to win the section championship and advance to state. The Huskies downed New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva 48-18 in the semifinals and then defeated United South Central 49-19 in the finals.Against NRHEG, Jordan Biehn (120), Cameron Henning (132), Eliot Jurries (138), Paden Moore (152), Darick Vancura (182), Tanner Menke (195) and Jack Ziemer (220) had pins for JCC. NRHEG’s only fall came from Dustin Bursheim at 132.In the other semifinal, USC edged Blue Earth Area 39-36. Logan Sonnek got the decisive win, earning a 10-4 victory over Kysten Zierke at 195 pounds for a 39-24 USC lead.

Don Alger (106), Brett Byrne (113), Adam Knutson (120), Dylan Herman (132). Derek Herman (138) and Colton Carlson had pins for the Rebels. BEA’s fall guys were Luke Schavey (145), Kolt Gorg (152), Micah Twedt (220) and Martin Granados (285).

In the championship dual, USC stayed right with the Huskies through the first six weights before the eventual winners pulled away. JCC outscored the Rebels 36-7 over the final eight matches.

Alger (106) had the only pin for USC.

Section 2AA: The seeds held up exactly as planned Saturday as No. 1 New Prague downed No. 2 Watertown-Mayer 43-17 in the finals of the Section 2AA tournament in Watertown.

In the semifinals, New Prague edged No. 4 seed Hutchinson 32-20 and Watertown-Mayer downed No. 3 seed Scott West 36-25.

New Prague takes a 25-3 record to state.
