MANKATO — Mark Korteum pitched a one-hitter to help Mankato American reach the third-place game of the annual Mulvihill Leagions baseball tournament, which is being held this weekend at Franklin Rogers Park and Wolverton Field.
Mankato American opened Saturday's pool play with a 7-0 victory over Kenyon, fueled by Korteum's strong pitching performance. He pitched a complete game, allowing only one hit and two walks with three strikeouts.
Drew Quame was 2 for 4 with a two-run double, and Brandon Treinen was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Cooper Wolfe added two hits.
In the second game, Mankato American lost 8-3 to Apple Valley, losing a 1-0 lead through three innings. Apple Valley took control of the game by scoring six runs in the fourth inning.
Arlen Nett took the loss, pitching 3 2/3 innings and allowing five runs and eight hits. Pat Rohlfing finished the game and gave up three runs on four hits.
Quame got Mankato American on the board with an RBI double in the first inning. Brad Kunz's two-run single in the fifth inning cut the margin to 6-3. Sean Allan had two hits and scored a run.
Mankato American (3-3), which defeated Austin/Albert Lea 3-2 in nine innings Friday, plays in the third-place game at 2 p.m. today at Wolverton Field against an opponent to be determined.
Mankato National had its final pool-play game Saturday postponed and will face Litchfield at 9 a.m. today at Franklin Rogers Park. On Friday, Mankato National lost 10-9 in nine innings to Viroqua, Wis., and 5-1 to Bloomington Gold.
Mankato National (1-8) will play in the fifth-place or seventh-place game at 11:30 a.m. against an opponent and at a site to be determined after the first game.
In other tournament games Saturday, Austin/Albert Lea defeated Kenyon 7-3, and Bloomington Gold downed Litchfield 4-0.
