Rueda column: There's no slowing down for Waseca's Shane Streich

You might think Shane Streich was in line for a little time off after successfully defending his two state championships at last weekend's Class A state meet. If you thought that, you'd be wrong.

Streich won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs for the second straight year on Saturday, but the junior has not stopped training. This Saturday he'll compete in the championship bracket of the New Balance Nationals meet in Greensboro, N.C.

He qualified for the race on Friday when he turned in a time of 1:51.92 in the 800 prelims at the state meet. For Streich, that was almost as satisfying as winning the state title the following day.

"I knew what the qualifying time was to get to North Carolina," Streich said. "That was my goal going into state and, when I made it in the prelims, I was pretty happy."

So this means Streich will compete in Greensboro and then take some time off, right?

Two weeks later, on July 4 weekend, Streich will be in Eugene, Ore., to compete in the 20-and-under division at Junior Nationals. The qualifying time for that one was even stiffer than it was for the New Balance meet, but again, his prelim time at state got him in.

"Junior Nationals is made up of mostly college freshmen and high school seniors," Streich said. "It's going to be a pretty good field of runners."

So after returning from Oregon, then he'll take some time off, right? Well ... yes ... but just a little.

The senior-to-be at Waseca plans to take it easy for about two weeks and then begin training for the fall cross country season. Despite all the wear and tear on his legs and body during the school year, Streich said he feels pretty good.
