MANKATO — The Minnesota State baseball team moved beyond the 20-win plateau on Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of Augustana College in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action at the MSU baseball field.
The Mavericks claimed the first game 4-3 and held on for a 6-4 win in game two as sophomore third baseman Connor McCallum extended his hitting streak to nine games.
With the first game tied at 3, the Mavericks delivered the winning run when Todd Standish drew a bases-loaded walk. Senior right-hander Mahlon Zimmerman retired the Vikings in order in the ninth to clinch the win. Junior right-hander Jason Hoppe received a no-decision after striking out five in six innings while allowing four hits and three walks..
Parker Sullivan, Scott Lindner and Nolan Johnson had two hits apiece for MSU. Lindner and Johnson each had RBIs.
In Game 2, MSU built a 6-0 lead and then held on for the 6-4 win. Lucas Skjefte went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. He stroked an RBI single up the middle in the second and added a two-run single through the left side in the fifth.
Sullivan was 2 for 4 and Mike Andries cracked a two-run single. Johnson and Standish each had doubles.
Junior right-hander T. J. Larson improved to 4-0 after allowing three runs in 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts, four walks and three hits. Zimmerman came on in the seventh to quell an Augustana rally and earn his sixth save of the season.
The Mavericks (21-7, 10-3 in NSIC) and Vikings conclude their four-game series with a single contest at 11 a.m. today at the MSU field.
