Strong second half propels Minnesota State women to victory

MANKATO — Minnesota State shot 35.5 percent in the first half and 52.2 percent in the second half.

Guess which half went better?

“I told the girls at halftime that we had 20 minutes to right the ship,” coach Emilee Thiesse said. “We got some stops early, and that led to some baskets.”

Minnesota State defeated Bemidji State 69-59 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball game Friday at Bresnan Arena. The Mavericks were sluggish in the first half, leading only 31-27 at halftime, but were more efficient in the second half.

A 9-0 run to start the second half was the key.

“We gave up too many easy offensive rebounds,” Thiesse said. “Instead of going around them, we just kind of panicked inside.”

Steffaney Thomas and Karlee Gengenbacher each scored 13 points to lead the Mavericks, with Ali Hoefer adding 12 and Aubrey Davis scoring 11. The Mavericks were outrebounded by nine but committed five less turnovers.

Minnesota State (17-4, 13-4 in NSIC) hosts Minnesota Crookston at 4 p.m. today.
