Minnesota State roundup

MANKATO — Senior Lauren Smith tied a school record by extending her goal-scoring streak to five games as Minnesota State skated to a 2-2 overtime tie against St. Cloud State in WCHA women’s hockey action at All Seasons Arena Friday.

The Huskies won the shootout 1-0.

Smith, who has five goals and two assists in her five-game scoring streak, is tied with Michelle Sikich (1999) for the program record.

The Mavericks’ Tracy McCann scored at 1:11 of the first period, with an assist from Smith.

St. Cloud State took the lead early in the third period, but Minnesota State answered at 10:59 when Smith twirled a backhand shot between the pads to tie the game at 2.

The Mavericks were outshot 39-25. Danielle Butters finished with 37 saves.

Minnesota State (10-17-4, 6-15-4 in WCHA) hosts St. Cloud State again today at 3:07 p.m.

Softball: The Mavericks split their first two games of the season Friday at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Leadoff Classic in Tucson, Ariz.

MSU dropped its opener 1-0 to Central Oklahoma. Senior Courtney McKelvogue was the hard-luck loser, striking out four, scattering six hits and allowing one unearned run.

In Game 2, freshman Coley Ries made her first collegiate start and picked up the win in a 5-2 victory over Missouri-St. Louis. Ries, a Mankato East graduate, allowed one run in five hits, walked four and fanned six.

MSU trailed 1-0 before Abby Sonner’s RBI single tied the game. The game went into extras before the Mavericks scored four in the eighth to win it.

Samanha Holien had  two-run homer and Sonner also knocked in two runs. MSU plays Southeast Oklahoma State and UC-San Diego today.
