---- — WILLMAR — Donovan Feenstra pitched 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, and Josh Fuentes hit a go-ahead home run as the Mankato MoonDogs defeated Willmar 6-4 to earn a split of the Northwoods League baseball doubleheader Saturday.
Willmar won the opener 2-1.
In the second game, Willmar scored four runs in the second inning off MoonDogs’ starter Ryan Quick, but Feenstra got the final out. He then went four more innings, allowing only one hit and one walk with two strikeouts. He lowered his earned-run average to 0.40.
Jess Amedee pitched a hitless seventh inning for his fifth save, needing only eight pitches to retire three batters, one by strikeout.
Fuentes ended up with two hits, including a two-run homer in the fourth that put the MoonDogs ahead 5-4. He scored twice. He raised his batting average to .480.
Chase Simpson and Jonathan Rodriguez each had an RBI single in the first inning, and Rodriguez added a solo homer in the fifth. Timothy Arakawa was 3 for 4 and scored twice.
In the opening seven-inning game, Willmar won 2-1, with Danny Brennan’s two-run double in the fifth inning providing the winning run.
Mankato got its run in the third inning. Alex Polston singled and took second on a wild pitch. Arakawa’s sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third, and Polston scored on a wild pitch.
Julian Esquibel pitched all seven innings, allowing four hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Both runs were earned.
The MoonDogs (13-12) return to Franklin Rogers Park today to take on Willmar. Game time is set for 6:05 p.m.
The MoonDogs play their next seven games at home, with two-game sets against Thunder Bay, St. Cloud and Waterloo.
