Miller looking at MSU for chance to win

Senior-to-be wants to contend for national championship

MANKATO — Despite starting in all 65 games over the last two seasons, Connor Miller hadn’t won many games.

With one season of eligibility remaining in his college basketball career, he’s ready to trade playing time for victories.

“I just wanted to find a better program for my last year and put myself in the best position to have a successful season and have a chance to win a national championship,” Miller said. “Mankato recruited me in high school, but I was pretty set on Division I. If I had went Division II, Mankato was right at the top of my list.”

Miller, a 6-foot-4 guard from Eau Claire, Wis., has decided to transfer to Minnesota State for his senior season. He’s spent the last three seasons at Samford, a Division I university in Birmingham, Ala., that won just 36 of 96 games during his career, while the Mavericks won 30 games last season.

As a sophomore, Miller started all 32 games, averaging 6.3 points and 3.5 rebounds, and shot 35.2 percent from 3-point range.

Last season, he started all 33 games and averaged 6.4 points and 3.9 rebounds, shooting 37.9 percent from 3-point range.

“I think I’m a solid shooter, have good leadership, make the right decisions,” Miller said. “I’m sneaky athletic, and I’ll do whatever it takes to win.”

Miller is the second Division I transfer to join the Mavericks in the last week. On Sunday, Austin native Joe Aase, a 6-8 forward, said that he will transfer to Minnesota State from Division I Davidson. Aase will have three seasons of eligibility.

“This is a whole new journey for me, just like coming out of high school,” Miller said. “It’s really clicked with me that I only have one year left, and I want to make the most out of it.”
