Tennis ... anyone? New program debuts tonight

MANKATO — A couple of local tennis coaches have started up a new program called Tennis in Mankato Summer Family Fitness Nights.

The event takes place each Monday, beginning, tonight. throughout June and July at the Mankato West courts. The husband-wife coaching team of Adam and Sarah Doll will run the show which goes from 7-8 p.m. even evening.

The Dolls have been coaching within School District 77 for the past five years. They are also USTA and Greater Mankato Community Tennis Association members.

“We have programs for kids and we have programs for adults,” Adam Doll said. “We thought we’d try something that would get the kids and their parents involved at the same time.

The USTA has a summer program it calls ‘Play Days’ which is geared toward kids. We thought we’d revise it a little bit to include the parents, too.”

The Dolls are hoping the program not only gets more families involved in tennis, but also gets more people physically active. In a nutshell, parents are encouraged to bring their kids out to the courts to explore the game of tennis while the adults participate in Zumba (from 6-7 p.m.) or Cardio Tennis(from 7-8 p.m.).

The activities for all ages include Quickstart nets for beginning players; ball machines; tennis games; skill instruction; and cardio fitness. Equipment will be provided.

“It’s a new program and we have no idea how it will be received,” Adam Doll said. “We’ve tried to get the word out as best we could. The more people we can introduce to the sport of tennis, the better.”

The one Monday there is no event scheduled is June 30. For more information on Cardio tennis, go to or Mankato CER. For more information about Zumba, email Beckie Haycraft at
