NORTH MANKATO — It was a pretty good day for Lakeville South on Thursday.
After qualifying for their first state softball tournament, the Cougars won two straight games at Caswell Park to reach the championship matchup. A short time later, all the seniors on the team did the walk at graduation back in Lakeville.
Lakeville South opened the Class AAA tournament with a 2-1 win over Orono in eight innings. Kylie Stuber held the Spartans two hits for the win. Bailee Jackson, Michaela Thielen and Alicia Young had two hits apiece for the Cougars.
In the semifinals, Lakeville South thumped Anoka 11-0. Amanda Bloomquist had a grand slam while Madison Rutter and Stober had two RBIs apiece. Stober tossed a three-hitter.
Maple Grove 4, North St. Paul 1: Sydney Smith took a perfect game into the seventh inning but had to settle for a two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and no walks. Samantha Sadler went 2 for 3 and Kea Anderson hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the top of the sixth.
Orono 4, Becker 1: Orono scored two first-inning runs and that was enough to advance to the consolation championship. Winner Hannah Bergh struck out 10 in seven innings. Rebekah Smith and Shelby Earley had two hits apiece for the Spartans. Earley drove in three runs.
Bloomington Jefferson 3, New Prague 1: Claire Woebke’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the fourth was the difference. Krista Flugstad fanned 13 and scattered six hits for the win. She was also 2 for 2 at the plate.
Anoka 5, Becker 1: Taylor Chell smacked a two-run homer and Dayja Rosarios and Alyssa Wicks added two hits apiece for the Tornadoes. Amber Elliot allowed two hits over five innings for the win and Megan Lindenfelser tossed two perfect innings of relief.
Becker’s Ericka Schwartz had two hits and an RBI.
