ST. PAUL — Mankato East senior Calvin Deike was one of three area athletes to win individual championships Friday at the state boys and girls track meet hosted by Hamline University.
Deike competed in the Class AA pole vault and finished first with a height of 14-feet-6. Irondale's Joe Kelner was second at 14-0.
Finals were competed in eight events Friday in both the boys and girls meets in each class. Deike was the only area entrant to place and earn all-state honors in Class AA.
In Class A, St. Clair's Katelyn Weber and New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva's Carlie Wagner both won championships.
Weber successfully defending her state discus title by reaching a distance of 126-feet-1 on Friday. Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial sophomore Alayna Theissen finished second at 125-10.
Wagner, who a state championship in girls basketball this past winter, eclipsed the field in the high jump by reaching a height of 5-feet-6. Belle Plaine's Amara Meyer tied for eighth at 5-0.
In the long jump, Tri-City United's Briana Berninghaus finished fifth with a distance of 16-7.75.
The only other area place-winner Friday was St. Clair's Ryan Kruse in the Class A boys shot put. He finished fourth with a toss of 52-0.5.
The Class A and AA meets conclude today with finals in all remaining events.
