MoonDogs come up short at Thunder Bay

---- — THUNDER BAY, ONT. — Thunder Bay scored four runs in the sixth inning, rallying to defeat the Mankato MoonDogs 6-4 in a Northwoods League baseball game Saturday.

The MoonDogs took the lead in the top of the second inning when Krysthian Leal’s sacrifice fly scored Quinnton Mack.

In the fifth inning, the MoonDogs plated two runs on doubles by Timothy Arakawa, Chase Simpson and Matt Wollenzin, with Simpson and Wollenzin picking up RBIs.

Mankato starter Julian Esquibel pitched four scoreless innings before yielding one run in the fifh and four runs in the sixth, leaving with two outs. He gave up four hits and six walks with four strikeouts.

Relievers Ryan Quick and Zach Hobbs finished the game, combining to allow one run on two hits and one walk with one strikeout.

The MoonDogs had a chance to rally in the top of the ninth inning as Hibraim Cordova, Arakawa and Josh Fuentes opened with consecutive singles. However, Simpson grounded into a double play, scoring one run, but the rally ended in the next at-bat. Thunder Bay had five double plays in the game.

Fuentes ended up 3 for 4, raising his average to .368. Arakawa had two hits.

The MoonDogs (18-18, 1-0 in second half) host St. Cloud today, beginning at 6:05 p.m. at Franklin Rogers Park. The teams play at Franklin Rogers Park again Sunday at 6:05 p.m.
