Balanced Gusties down Simpson

ST. PETER — The Gustavus Adolphus men’s basketball team kicked off the 2013-14 season with an 86-68 nonconference win over Simpson College Saturday night. Five Gustavus players reached double figures in scoring.

Issac Tapp and Brian Jacobs led the Gustavus offense with 18 points apiece. Peter Kruize scored 16 points, Jordan Dick had 14 points, and Brody Ziegler finished with 12 points. Martin Feddersen had a game-high seven assists for the Gusties.

The Gusties jumped to a 17-5 lead in the first five minutes and never gave up the lead. Gustavus shot 62.7 percent from the field and outrebounded Concordia 37-27.

The Gusties return to action at 7 p.m., today when they host Buena Vista University .

Women’s hockey: Allison Eder-Zdechlik’s goal and assist helped the Gusties claim a 3-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Concordia College Friday in Moorhead.

Keri Pickel and Carolyn Draayer both scored Gustavus goals and Amanda Cartony recorded two assists for the Gusties.

Gustavus outshot Concordia 34-21 with Tara Hoverstad recording 19 saves for the Gusties. Gustavus center Madison Gendreau won all of her 11 faceoffs.

Gustavus (2-1-1) will cap off its two-game serious with Concordia at 2 p.m., today in Moorhead.

Men’s hockey: The Gusties outshot Concordia College 37-22 but it wasn’t enough as the Cobbers won 3-1 in an MIAC game at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter.

Corey Leivermann scored the Gusties’ only goal with Sam Smith getting the assist. Gustavus goaltender John McLean made 18 saves.

The Gusties (2-3) complete the two-game series with Concordia at 7 p.m., tonight in St. Peter.
